Litter Training

Of course rabbits do there business like every other animal on planet Earth. But one of the many great qualities of a rabbit is that they can be trained to use a litter box. A litter box is great not only is it easy to clean rather than scrubbing and picking up the poop around the place it is great at absorbing the horrible odor of rabbit pee. If you follow these steps your rabbit will be litter boxed trained in no time!

1. You need to find a litter box that is big enough to hold your rabbit and small enough to fit in a cage( if you have one). Next you need to find a good litter brand if you go on this website http://www.rabbit.org/faq/sections/litter.html#litter then you can get some idea of what is in your budget and what what will work best for you.

TIP: Spaying or neutering your rabbit can do wonders not only does it stop unwanted behavior such as aggression, humping and spraying it can reduce the horrible smell of rabbit pee as well.

2. Find the place that your rabbit tends to use as the bathroom( usually in a corner) and place the litter box there with the litter and hay( either in a hay rack or in a clump in the corner of the box). Each time that your rabbit uses the litter box or when you see your rabbit using the litter box reward him/her with a treat such as a small piece of carrot or a treat from a packet( don't use these all the time)

FACT: Its EXTREMELY RARE to find a rabbit that is perfectly litter trained. A rabbit usually will from time to time go outside of his/her litter box but that is fine DON'T PUNISH HIM FOR NOT USING THE LITTER BOX!

3. If you find that your rabbit still won't go in the litter box pick up the poo left around the cage and wipe up the pee with an absorbent paper towel and place it in the litter box. The rabbit can then think that that's where he is meant to go.

4. Once he is using his/her litter box successfully try putting the rabbit and the litter box in a larger space and see what happens if your rabbit uses it with out any problems your rabbit is now litter trained! If not just keep trying it may because the litter is not comfortable or that if you have your rabbit in a pen with his cage in it he/she prefers it in the cage.
