The diet of a rabbit is very important actually it is probably the most important.
Unlike dogs that can eat almost anything with out affect thats the opposite for rabbits. So here is an outline of the diet a rabbit SHOULD be eating:
Less than 8 weeks: should be still with their mother.
8 weeks: Should have unlimited alfalfa hay and pellets as well as fresh water.
9 - 11 weeks: Should still have unlimited alfalfa hay and pellets, fresh water and start introducing small amounts of grass hay such as timothy to the diet.
12 weeks start introducing (in VERY small amounts) vegetables to the diet.
Keep adding more vegetables to the diet. If they get diarrhea from a certain type of vegie eliminate that veggie from the diet. Diarrhea from a certain type of veggie may mean that their stomachs do not agree with that vegie or that they need to wait a little longer to have vegies.
Continue this diet until:
7 months: Should now only have a small amount of pellets( follow directions on packaging), unlimited GRASS hay NO high carb hay such as alfalfa because alfalfa is fattening. Also the pellets should not be alfalfa based. Unlimited fresh water available to.
DO NOT CHANGE THE DIET QUICKLY! SLOWLY INTRODUCE THE FOOD TO THE DIET! Find out how to add food to the diet by clicking the page on transition.
